We Stand in Solidarity

Dear UofT Black Student Association Members,

The police force in North America was instituted to essentially oppress and subjugate Black and Indigenous people to violent acts of murder as a means of oppressing our communities with the end goal of anhilating our existence to the benefit of white supremacy. In 2020, this end goal has not changed.

During this very pandemic, the continued perpetuation of merciless police murder against our sacred black community has resulted in the recorded deaths of Ahmed Aurbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and even closer to home, Regis Korchinski-Pacquet here in Toronto, along with countless other black people whose tragedies have not been recorded on camera across North America.

Despite the acts of violence they continue to inflict against us, we continue to stand undefeated, united and in solidarity with one another. The resilience and strength of our black community is felt in our acts of protest, in our push to have our voices heard from those who simply refuse to listen and in our inability to accept the injustices inflicted upon our fellow black brothers and sisters. We have had enough.

In response to the recent injustices, we first ask that you to take care of your mental health. This is a trying and draining time for us, so we ask that you take care of yourself first. If you are able to, check on your fellow family members, fellow black friends and those close to you.
We then ask for you to take action. Raise awareness on your social media platforms, sign petitions that support the recognition and justice of our fallen brothers and sisters, donate to funds that aid in getting protestors out of jail and do your part in having a healthy discussion with those around you.
This is a call for a revolution. Together we are not alone, and in solidarity, we stand.

Yours in Solidarity,
The Black Students Association ✊🏿
